2017 Tax Letter from Mayor

Departments and Services, Elected Officials, Latest News, Residents   ·   December 18, 2017

Dear Germantown Taxpayer,

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of a significant change in computing the Germantown City Income Tax.

During the November 6, 2017 meeting, the Germantown City Council unanimously voted to pass Ordinance 17-35, which eliminates the City Income Tax Credit as of January 1, 2018.

The City Income Tax credit has been used by residents who work and pay taxes in other municipalities.  In 2017, the credit is 75%.  In 2018, the credit will be 0%.  Consequently, residents who are working and paying income taxes to other municipalities will be subject to the 1.25% Germantown City Income Tax in 2018.

The Council has examined different ways to increase City revenues to support the rising cost of City services, street and sidewalk maintenance, park improvements and improvements in the downtown area to enhance business opportunities.  Recent street levies have failed.  Monies generated by other levies are funding some maintenance and personnel costs.  However, they are not sufficient to pay for much needed capital improvements.  The option to eliminate the income tax credit was chosen due to citizen reluctance to support a tax increase.

For assistance on determining how this decision impacts you, contact your employer for
