Halloween Safety

Latest News   ·   October 13, 2017

Germantown Fire-EMS wants to ensure a safe and happy Trick-or-Treat experience for your family by offering the following safety tips:

At your home:

  •             Check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs. Leave your porch light on so children know it is OK to visit your home.
  •             Remove anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, lawn decorations, bikes and toys.
  •             Remove wet, slippery leaves from sidewalks and steps.
  •             Don’t overload electrical outlets with holiday lighting. Keep holiday decorations   away from heat sources.
  •             Jack-o-Lanterns are safest lit using battery operated candles.

  •             Costumes should be bright and reflective. Make sure costumes are correct length  so as to not become entangled or pose a trip hazard.
  •             Add reflective tape to trick or treat bags and the costume itself for greater visibility. Glow sticks can also be added to the costume.
  •             Masks can limit or block eyesight, so consider non-toxic make-up as a safer alternative.
  •             When shopping for costumes or accessories, purchase those that are clearly indicated to be flame resistant.

  •             Children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  •             A working flashlight with fresh batteries is a must. Always stay in well lighted areas, look carefully before crossing streets, use crosswalks where possible.
  •             Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before allowing child to  consume.

Never go out alone!
